Importance of Regular Dental Check-up | Oral Health

Everyone assumes that their teeth are in good shape but visiting the dentist is necessary. A visit to the dentist is not what everyone desires during their normals days due to its cost or dental anxiety and lack of our time.

A regular oral examination is not only detecting and treating problems but also preventing them to occur in future. No matter how well you take care of your teeth, a professional examination is important.

Tackling problems at an early stage can save a lot of bother and money in the long run. Don’t have time and patience to visit a dentist? Here is are some important point to be considered why you should visit your dentist every 6 months.

  • Remove tartar and plaque

The bacteria from our food that we eat collects in our mouth in the form of a colourless and sticky substance called “plaque”. If the plaque is not removed then it will harden into a substance called “tartar”. Tartar can lead to tooth decay, inflammation in the mouth and gum diseases.

Plaque can be taken care by regular brushing and flossing. If plaque hardens then it will turn into tartar however flossing and brushing won’t be able to get it off. The only solution to get the tartar off is with the help of a dental specialist. The dentist finds tartar and scrapes it off your teeth preventing it from building up even more and causing various health.

  • Spot and prevent the cavities

Cavities occur when the bacteria in tartar and plaque produce acids that eat away the outer coating of enamel and the inner layer of our teeth. This acid eventually burns small holes that are cavities into the affected tooth. If the cavities are not addressed at an early stage then it can cause tooth sensitivity and severe pain.

The dentist has several ways to locate the cavities. The dentist takes X-rays of your affected tooth, which can help them to locate cavities more accurately. When you visit a dentist they also perform visual inspection allowing them to find smaller cavities which aren’t visible on the X-ray.

  • Detection of gum diseases

Gum disease is also important along with cavities. Periodontal (gum) diseases occur when the toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque build up around the gums and irritate them. This irritation can cause inflammation of the gums or gingivitis.

The dentist examines our gumline at the same time they’re inspecting our teeth for cavities and plaque.

  • Early detection of mouth cancer

Oral cancer can develop in the mouth, lips, the back of the mouth. People who smoke, drink or have a family history of oral cancer are especially at risk, but anyone can get it.

Dentists are trained to detect early signs of oral cancer during a regular dental examination. The quicker you identify a possible oral cancer, the quicker you can take steps to deal with it. The best way to identify oral cancer early is to schedule regular dental checkups.

As we come to the conclusion that dental appointment isn’t just about making your smile look good. Also scheduling a regular dental appointment will help you to stay healthy and feel better.
