The home is where our heart belongs. We all invest a considerable amount of money in
building our dream homes. We all love to take good care of it and protect it from all
eventualities. Living in Goa, we receive a considerable amount of rainfall in the months of
June to September. The rain is accompanied by wind and together then can cause havoc to
houses. In order to avoid this there are several precautionary measures that one can take to
protect their home.
The first step that one needs to do before the monsoons arrive is to avoid the possibility of
waterlogging. This can be done by making sure all the drains around the house are
unclogged and cleared thereby letting the rain water to flow unobstructed.
You should always inspect your roof before the rains. Whether you have a terrace slab or
tiles, it is a good habit to make sure both are in a good condition. Cracks in the ceiling or
tiles will allow water to seep into your home thereby causing a lot of damage.
It is essential to check all the electrical points of your house. We need to make sure that
they do not come in contact with any water. This could lead to short circuits thus causing a
fire. Repeat the inspection after the monsoons begin, to be double sure that no water is
coming in contact with your electrical points.
The exteriors of the house play a very important role in protecting the interiors. It is advised
to paint the exteriors before the monsoons with a waterproof coat of paint. This will go a
long way in ensuring that the walls do not absorb moisture.
Rainy season can cause a lot of corrosion due to water and moisture. Make sure all your iron
grills and gates are well painted in order to protect them from getting corroded.
Similarly wooden doors expand in the monsoons and may begin to touch the floor while opening and
closing. It would be a good habit to take out the door and tighten all the screws and also
polish the surface.
Moist surroundings are the perfect thriving platform for pests and insects. It is advised to
carry out proper pest control to keep ants, termites and other insects away from your
homes during the monsoons. Termites in particular tend to cause a lot of damage to the
wood in your homes so they need to be kept at bay.
Roll up all carpets and rugs and put them away as these are not meant for this season. Both
will absorb moisture and give out a foul smell. Also remember to throw a few naphthalene
balls in all your cupboards which will help in keeping moisture away.
Take out all your indoor plants and leave them out for the monsoons. Indoor plants absorb a
lot of moisture and retain it in the room. This will result in dampness of your house. If you have open balconies then we advise you cover them using a plastic balcony covering to prevent water from entering in.
If your house is well protected from the monsoons you can go ahead and enjoy the season
thoroughly.
