Lockdown Recipes: For Those Untimely Food Cravings

Cravings can strike you at any time of the day. While eating out is not possible, and most of us are avoiding the takeaway option due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Most of us are eating whatever food is available at home. For foodies out there, the ongoing quarantine period could be a bit of a challenge. To satisfy those cravings, why not cook at home what we like and crave for. It’s not that you can cook everything, but some dishes which you like and are easy can be cooked by yourself. All that’s required is patience and a little bit of creativity. Here are a few dishes which you could try out during the lockdown.

Pancakes

Who doesn’t love pancakes? It’s a favourite with every age group. All you need to make a pancake is just 3 ingredients. You need maida, eggs, and baking powder to make it fluffy. Add egg and sugar in a bowl whisk it well to it, add 1 cup maida, add half a teaspoon of baking powder and salt for taste and whisk it well. Grease a pan with oil and pour the batter into the pan and cook for two minutes. Once the pancakes are made, drizzle the dish with honey or maple syrup to add to its deliciousness and attractiveness. The pancakes are ready to be eaten.

Momos

Yes, you can easily make momos at home. First, you need to make a dough of maida. Make the filling of veggies like carrots, mushroom, cabbage, onion, and enclose it in a thin layer of maida and shape it in the pattern you want. You can then steam the momos in an idli steamer and let it cook. Similarly, you can make egg and chicken momos. Easy recipes are available on youtube.

Honey Chilli Potatoes

Fries are everyone’s favourite. Why not make it at home in a different way. Do try this if you love fries. After peeling the potatoes and cutting, marinate it with Haldi powder, chilli powder and salt. Then deep fry them till it becomes crispy. In another pan, heat up the oil. Fry some ginger garlic, add crushed chilli flakes, then some sweet chilli sauce and soya sauce and honey for the stickiness. Bring it to a simmer, turn off the hob and mix the fried potatoes in it. This is a delicious snack that you must try to liven up your tea-time.

Pan Pizza

Craving for pizza can never be locked down, especially for the youngsters at home. Instead of ordering pizza from Dominos or Pizza Hut during this lockdown period, try to satiate the pizza craving with home-made pizza. You might think pizza is hard to make but trust me it is not. Some say to make pizza you need an oven but it’s not necessary. Here is a recipe to make a pizza from scratch and doesn’t require an oven.

To make the base of pizza take a cup of maida, add half teaspoon of baking powder, baking soda, oil, curd & mix it. Add water to it, mix it well till it turns into a running dough. Once the dough is made let it rest for some time.

In another pan put some oil, add veggies like onion, tomato, capsicum, mushrooms to it, add salt, chilli flakes, oregano, mix them and cook it mildly. Once this is ready, take the dough spread it with your fingers in a circular shape to make the base of the pizza. Put it into a pan, let the base of pizza heat a little on both sides. After it’s heated, add pizza sauce on one side of the base, add all the cooked veggies to it and grate Mozzarella cheese over the veggies. Cook it for around 10 min and your simple delicious pizza is ready.

Summer drinks

Since it’s the summer season and scorching hot outside why not try making simple drinks at home like shakes, juices or smoothies. One can easily make lemonade, virgin mojito, watermelon juice, mango shake, chikoo shake, lassi, banana smoothies etc, with the available summer fruit. It is effortless, all you have to do is grind the fruits in a mixer grinder, adding milk, chia seeds, cardamom, maybe some yoghurt, honey or sugar depending on the fruit you are making.

With increased boredom why not cook your favourite dish at home and ultimately more snacking. While we are spending extra time at home it’s easier to make some of your favourite treats. While making home some delicious street food will bring families together. It also encourages you to use the best quality ingredients in the most hygienic environment.
