5 Most Important Rules To Keep Your Warehouse Safe

Warehouses are a prime location for conducting logistics and shipping businesses all across the globe. If not maintained well warehouses can turn dangerous for operations and can pose a risk to employees as well as the stored goods. Rules to keep your warehouse safe are an important necessity for the safety of all. In this article we discuss a few ways to adopt measures that will help keep workers safe and aid in smooth operations of the business.

1. Proper safety equipment:

Safety always begins with every individual first and one of the safest measures to prevent mishaps is to wear the right safety equipment to protect oneself. Hardhats and safety goggles prevent bodily harm during mishaps. Apart from body safety, warehouses need to implement safety measures such as sprinkler systems and alarms in case of fire. All emergency exits, emergency tools and signages must be in place to facilitate easy exit during a crisis. Staff must be periodically briefed on how to act during an emergency.

2. Clear labelling of hazard zones:

Every warehouse will have areas which can be labelled as hazardous. It is imperative that warehouses evaluate their workspaces and identify such areas. If any dangerous machinery is used it has to go into such a hazard zone. Hazard zones have to be distinguished from the rest by using proper signages that are easily visible. Hazard zones must always be well illuminated.

Examples of signages:

  • Beware Flammable materials
  • Dangerous chemicals
  • Hard hat-only zones

3. Safe lifting methods:

As far as operations go, warehouses need to use forklifts or hydraulic dollies to lift heavy goods and not rely on human labour. The operators of machinery need to be well trained and warehouses need to ensure that only a trained operator is handling the machinery at all times. If human labour force lifting is necessary then warehouses need to ascertain that the labour is well trained in the right methods of lifting so that they avoid hurting themselves. Warehouse Management Systems in Goa need to ensure that a clear set of warehouse safety rules are implemented in this regard.

4. Eliminate potential safety hazards:

The bonus of providing safe workspaces lies on every warehouse owner. Warehouses need to do all that they can to maintain the safety of their workforce. Floors need to be kept trip free by watching out for unused cables, cracks in flooring, waste materials, accumulated debris and so on. Such stuff on the floor can pose serious safety hazards. Housekeeping staff must be well trained to keep a check on these aspects.

5. Provide safety courses and training:

Although warehouses often implement the best of safety measures, the staff working in the warehouse may not be aware of what they need to do and not do in order to be safe. It is of utmost importance that safety courses and the right training is conducted for the workforce periodically as it will help everyone to be aware of what they need to do to be safe at all times.
