How to Identify the Perfect Fishing Equipment

How to Identify the Perfect Fishing Equipment

“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after”,  says Henry David Thoreau.

Fishing is not about the fish but those exciting moments that come along with it. It is a trait possibly passed on to all of us from our forefathers.

Whether you are fishing as a hobby or professionally, we all are in need of great fishing equipment. Shopping for fishing gear can be an overwhelming experience without proper guidance.

Let us begin,

This is the basic gear required when you decide to go out in the waters. Choosing the right rod depends on what type of fishing you would be doing. If you are into simple basic fishing, use a medium strength rod around 11.8 inches (30 centimetres) longer than your height. However, on the other hand, you can go in for longer and stronger rods for casting at a distance. As far as the material goes, Graphite rods are lighter and stiffer whereas Fiberglass rods are heavier, but much more flexible.

Another important aspect of your equipment is a fishing line. Rough environmental conditions necessitate heavier and stronger fishing lines while clear waters typically require stealthy thin and clear ones. You need to make sure that you carry the extra line in case of eventualities of it breaking and getting tangled during fishing.

Besides lines, you’ll definitely need to carry an assortment of fish hooks to catch fish of different sizes. The different types of hooks are single, double, circle, and treble. If you are a beginner then single hooks are perfect. You get hooks of different sizes as well they range from number 32 (smallest) to 19/0 (largest).

You need a good bait to lure the fish to you. Live bait is a better option to get this done. Worms and minnows (small freshwater fish) make the perfect bait. Additionally, you can use fishing lures which are basically artificial baits. Light-coloured lures are ideal for bright days and clear water, while dark-coloured lures are used on cloudy days and in murky waters.

  • Bobber

Bobber is a piece of equipment that has a simple task of keeping your bait closer to the surface and letting you know when there is a fish trying to eat the bait. The bobber will sink when the fish pull the bait. Traditional bobbers are made of cork with a stick in it so that you can tie the line; modern ones are rounded and made of plastic. Both work equally well.

  • Sinkers

In order for your bait to remain stable and sink lower, you’ll need a piece of equipment known as sinkers. They are usually made of lead, brass or steel. They come in different shapes and weights depending on how deep you want to sink your bait.

Needle nose pliers are very useful for taking hooks out of your catch. Go in for one to reduce using your bare hands in case of accidents. Also, go in for fishing line cutters as fishing lines are designed to be super sturdy. You’ll need one to set up a new line.
