How To Prepare Your Child For An Eye Examination

How To Prepare Your Child For An Eye Examination

All the organs of the body are equally important and need to always be taken care of. The eyes are an important organ that takes care of our vision. Sight is literally a big blessing from the creator and we need to make sure we take good care of it.

We at Vision Care Superspeciality Eye Hospital are on a mission to provide healthcare with quality patient care. We come across several patients on a daily basis, many of whom are children. We have noticed that children due to their young age are often scared and anxious about eye check-ups. They do not easily cooperate with our doctors and staff. One of the reasons may be due to the fact that no parent actually talks and prepares them before the eye check.

Preparation for an eye check up

  • First of all, open up and tell them that they are being taken to the doctor to check their eyes. Explain to them in childlike language the importance of eyes. Show them pictures from books of a doctor’s clinic or the instruments that the doctor will use. You can play them a few videos off youtube and we are pretty sure they will be satisfied.
  • During the visit, try and reach the clinic a little earlier than your appointment so that the child gets familiar with the atmosphere. Then make sure not to leave the side of your child at any point in time. The parent’s closeness brings a sense of calmness to the child.
  • The parent themselves can make points of issues to discuss with the doctor and the same issues can be discussed with their children at home. So more or less, the child will be ready to hear the doctor talk about this.
  • If your child has to make a pair of glasses, you can leave the choice to your child. You can narrow down on a few frames and then leave the final choice to the child.
  • It is your duty to explain to the child all that the doctor says. The child will be unable to grasp anything that the doctor has said to them. Small things like how to clean lenses, the right way to wear glasses and so on needs to be explained properly to them.
  • Carry a few toys with you to the clinic to keep the child at ease. These toys may bring a sense of playfulness and cheer especially since the child is in a new surrounding.

Remember that an eye check-up is something routine and not alarming, so the parent, in the first place, has to remain cool and calm. In most cases, there will be nothing alarmingly wrong with your child. So all you need to do is explain to the child as to what the doctor has said and that should be enough.
