Tips for Home Isolation after you have Tested positive for Covid-19

If you have been tested positive for COVID-19 or you’re caring for a loved one with the virus, you might have a lot of questions. Like how long is the isolation necessary? What can you do to prevent the spread of germs? What can you do to make the patient feel more comfortable?

Most people who contract the virus experience mild symptoms and can isolate themselves while recovering at home. Older adults and people with existing medical conditions, such as heart or lung disease or diabetes, should consult a doctor before undergoing home isolation and always seek instant medical attention if the symptoms worsen. Here are some tips to follow while being under home isolation or taking care of a family member under home isolation.

While self-isolating

1.Stay isolated in a well-ventilated room and avoid shared spaces like using the same bathroom. If at all you need to move out, stay at least 6 feet away from any family members.

2.Clean most used surfaces such as doorknobs, switches, electronics, appliances, counters, etc.

3.Avoid sharing household items like dishes, towels, bedding and electronics.

4.Wear a mask in the presence of others. If your mask gets wet or dirty, replace it with a clean, dry mask. Change the face mask each day and dispose of the old one after use.

5.Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

While taking care of a sick family member

1.Designate one person to take care of the patient. This person should maintain minimum contact with family members who have critical medical conditions.

2.The caregiver should clean any areas with which the patient has come in contact. Clean and disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, and other commonly touched surfaces with EPA-registered disinfectants. Take precautions when doing the patient’s laundry and dishes like not using the same dish soap or scrubber or not vigorously shaking the laundry.

3.While in the vicinity of the patient you should maintain six feet between yourself and the patient. Always wear a face mask before going near the patient. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, wash hands often; and don’t touch your mask.

If you have any of the following symptoms then immediately consult a doctor.

-Cough with lots of colored sputum (mucus) or blood in your sputum

-Chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing or having trouble while breathing

-Severe headache, pain in the face, neck or ear

-Constant and severe abdominal pain

-Continuous vomiting

-Frequent diarrhea

-Extreme dehydration

-Fever that is not responding to medications
